Are You Thinking About Renovating Your Unit?
Read This First! We’ve put together a quick guide to help you plan a smooth and stress-free renovation in your strata-titled complex.
Request Permission
In some cases, you might not need approval for minor improvements; however, always verify this before starting any work. To begin, contact your body corporate to confirm whether your planned renovations require approval. After this, check with your local council to find out if you need any additional permits or consents. By taking these steps early, you can avoid delays, non-compliance issues, or unexpected costs.
Submit Application Form
Once you’ve ascertained what body corporate or council approvals are required, you can submit an application form. Access our lot improvements or renovation application form here: Templates-Forms-Lot-Improvement-Application-Form-QLD.pdf
Keep Your Neighbours Informed
Once you’ve received the necessary approvals, take a moment to let your neighbours know about your upcoming renovation. A little courtesy goes a long way! You can knock on their door or leave a friendly note explaining your plans, expected time frames, and any potential disruptions. Keeping your neighbours in the loop helps maintain harmony in the building and shows consideration for the community around you.
Monitor Noise
During your renovation, make sure to keep noise levels under control, especially when using power tools. Further to this, follow your complex’s by-laws and any local council regulations that apply to construction noise and permitted work hours. By respecting these rules, you help maintain positive relationships. Read more about Body Corporate By-Laws here
Organise Your Tradespeople
Use appropriately qualified tradespeople and request a time frame for the completion of the scope of works. Ensure you clearly communicate these timeframes with the committee, and all parties involved.
Advise your Strata Manager
Notify your Strata Manager once you’ve completed your renovations, so they can update the scheme’s records.
Take Photos
Capture clear before-and-after photos of your renovation. These images not only document your improvements but can also inspire other owners in the complex who may be considering similar upgrades.
Enjoy!
Now it’s time to kick back and enjoy you newly renovated space and hopefully all your hard work in planning pays off in returns.
If you’re unsure about any part of the renovation process, don’t hesitate to reach out to your Strata Manager. Not only can they guide you through the correct steps to ensure compliance with legislative requirements in your state, but they can also help you maintain positive relationships with your neighbours and the committee along the way.
