Home Safety & Security Measures
Check out TCM Strata’s top home safety & security measures, created to help protect your home from opportunistic thieves. From dowels to deadlocks, there are plenty of budget friendly ways to safeguard your property. Your home is your sanctuary; so be vigilant and consider these suggestions to ensure it remains safe and secure.
Simple Security Measures
- Check your doors and windows for weak spots – install key locks or make a cheap dowel using broom handles if you are short on cash.
- Window alarms are a wallet friendly yet efficient deterrent. They trigger a loud alarm when activated which can aid in preventing access via windows and sliding screen doors.
- CCTV Cameras and sensor lighting can be an effective additional security measure. Remember, your aim should be to make it as difficult as possible for opportunistic criminals to break in.
Look for the Right Locks
- Deadlocks are your first line of defense when it comes to effective home security. A deadlock can be installed on most standard doors, including front doors.
- Before you install a deadlock, it’s important to first ascertain if your door is in fact a fire door. If it is, you must only install a lock suitable for that particular brand of fire door.
- A deadlatch lock (001 or 002 lock) is generally acceptable for a fire door; these locks enable the door to self latch, which complies with fire regulations. If you aren’t sure, seek advice from your local locksmith.
- Deadlocks can be used in conjunction with a standard doorknob set, adding an additional layer of security.
Security Screens
- ‘Diamond grille’ style security screens have become a standard feature most homes, and offer additional security for windows and doors.
- In recent years, ‘Crimmesh’ style screens have increased in popularity, due to their resilience. Whilst a costlier measure, they are considered the ‘gold standard’ when it comes to security screens.
- Don’t forget to key lock your security screens – plastic ‘shield’ plates are easy to remove, so aren’t as effective as a security measure.
Going Away? Don’t Advertise!
- Don’t publicly advertise on social media that you are going on holidays. Lock the post down so only friends can see – otherwise you are letting burglars know that your home will be empty! Share away but be mindful of your settings on Facebook, Instagram and other social platforms.
- If you are heading away for an extended period, give your spare key to a trusted friend rather than hiding under the door mat or in your meter box. Criminals know where to look!
